Hearing Aid Repair

Hearing aids are small, robust instruments, and they often contain sensitive electronic components. Avoid getting them wet or exposing them to extreme temperatures (hot or cold) during the day.

Recommended maintenance for your hearing aids

Dry your hearing aids often. Consider investing in a hearing aid dehumidifier. Moisture will build up in your hearing aids during the day, either from sweat or switching between various temperatures. A drying or dehumidifying device helps remove the moisture which collects inside your device.

Check your batteries daily. You don't want to get stuck in a critical moment without batteries! If you do not use your hearing aids, remove the batteries to help circulate air inside to dry them out.

Use a soft, dry cloth to clean your hearing aids. Check for soil, debris, and earwax build-ups. Your audiologist will show you specific steps to take to clean and troubleshoot your specific instrument.

Common hearing aid issues

No sound at all

You may have the volume turned down by mistake. Another possibility could be that the battery is dead. Check your volume levels, and if that doesn’t help, try replacing or charging your batteries.

Sound is too quiet

A blockage can occur in the tubes if you wear a receiver-in-canal or a behind-the-ear hearing aid. Call us if this is that case. Another possibility may be that your hearing has changed.

Sound is patchy

Are your hearing aids cutting in and out? Typically this is because of low power. Try removing and turning the batteries on again. If that doesn't do it, take them to us for repair.

Feedback

Feedback often occurs with improperly fitted hearing aids. The amplified sound from the aids usually bounces back and gets picked up by the amplifier, creating an irritating whistling or screaming noise. If this happens, take out your hearing aids and re-insert them to ensure that they're snug. If that doesn't help, come and visit us so we can fit them properly for you.

When to Get Professional Repairs
